Leonard Cheshire (LC) which is a UK registered charity that works globally in the field of Disability and Inclusive Development received funding from Big Lottery Fund to deliver a 2 year project (Aug 2018-July 2020) entitled ‘Increasing access to waged employment for Persons with Disabilities in Kampala’. This project is implemented by Cheshire Services Uganda in collaboration with a consortium of four selected National organizations of persons with Disabilities in Uganda including; the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU); Uganda National Association of the Deaf (UNAD); Uganda National Action on Physical Disability (UNAPD) and the National Union of Women with Disabilities of Uganda (NUWODU).
This project is aimed at increasing access to waged employment for skilled persons with disabilities in Kampala in a sustainable and holistic way by addressing the capacity gaps of three DPOs (UNAPD, NUDIPU, NUWODU and UNAD). The end result of this project will be increasing employability skills of 100 Persons with disabilities, create an accessible online database bringing PWDs job seekers and employers together. This project will also work directly with potential employers to reduce stigma and negative stereotypes among employers, and increase their awareness and knowledge about the potential, abilities and rights of PWDs as well as incentives provided to employers who employ PWDs
