UNAPD with support from Voice is implementing a 2 Year Project (2022-2023) in the 2 lower local government structures of Pallisa District, namely: Kameke Sub County and Pallisa Town Council. The project aims at strengthening the effective participation of YWDs as rights holders in the political dispensation in the district.
Uganda’s CRPD committee concluding observations recommended that state parties repeals all legal provisions that restrict persons with disabilities(PWDs) from exercising their right to stand for elections, provide voter education, and awareness raising to PWDs as well as adapt measures to ensure that the electoral processes is accessible to voters with disabilities which includes among others; voter registration, accessible polling centers and materials, assistance to vote by persons of their choice and, to conduct the election process of PWDs in a transparent manner.
The above concerns however have not been satisfactorily implemented in Uganda’s context prompting UNAPD to take up a step further to raise the voices of Youth with Disabilities (YWDs) by piloting a project titled” Empowering Youth with Disabilities (YWDs) to participate in the political spaces in Pallisa district” where disability prevalence stands at 19.9% (n=77,158) according to National Population and Housing Census Report of 2016.
